Music Ministry

The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of immeasurable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this preeminence is that, as sacred melody united to words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy . . . Liturgical action is given a more noble form when sacred rites are solemnized in song, with the assistance of sacred ministers and the active participation of the people.

The entire worshiping assembly exercises a ministry of music. We come together as community to worship and express our shared faith through our full participation in celebrating the Mass. Yes, this includes music at the Mass! Music brings us together and, if our voices are given over fully to our worship, nothing is more stirring to the soul.

If you will open your hymnal, you see that it is a prayer book of song. Take the time to read the hymns of the day, which reflect the theme and readings of the Mass, or choose one of your favorites and recognize the prayer within. We have all heard the saying, “You who sing pray twice.”

Considerable time is spent in deciding which hymns are appropriate for the day. After carefully considering the readings, the music must reinforce their message. The use of resources provided by the NPM, the music publishers, as well as the workbook for lectors and gospel readers enable the choice of appropriate music.

The Music Ministry consists of the Music Director, organist, other musicians, cantors, adult choir and children’s choir. If you have an interest in being a part of the Music Ministry, please feel free to get involved. The choirs meet on alternate Sundays following 10 a.m. Mass. Join us on any Sunday. No auditions are necessary, we only ask that you commit your time and talent. We are also open to welcoming any of you who play musical instruments (brass, drums, woodwinds, strings, etc.) We are seeking to broaden our talent base. If any of you fit this description, please come forward. Age is no barrier.

You have all seen your children abandon themselves in song not worrying how they sound, who’s listening, if they get it right–just the sheer joy of singing! We are God’s children, and He will appreciate our joy in singing His praises as much as we enjoy listening to our children’s song.

Many people say they can’t sing. As we all sing together and give our music to God, something beautiful happens. The blending of all our voices becomes the gift we give back to God in praise. The times the whole congregation fully gives itself in song become for all of us a very moving experience. This could become a weekly experience if everyone fully participates. This is a joyous celebration! Sing your joy, your love. Let the music move you, get into it fully. Move with it and let it move you and the entire community. Be free! Clap, move, sing out or hum. Let the little ones dance.

Please pray for our Music Ministers
Yours is a share in the work of the Lord’s Spirit who draws us together as one, who makes harmony out of discord, who sings in our hearts the song of all that is holy. You help us to respond to God’s word, to acclaim the gospel, to sing of our salvation in Christ. Come to your ministry nurtured in prayer and reflection. Be faithful to the work you do, for through it the Lord saves his people!
